How to Interpret Cytology From Body Cavity Effusions

چکیده
Abdominocentesis and thoracocentesis are commonly used diagnostic tools in equine practice. Abdominocentesis is one of the standard diagnostic tests used in evaluating colic patients and is often performed to (1) differentiate strangulating from nonstrangulating lesions; (2) confirm gastrointestinal rupture; (3) document, evaluate, and monitor peritonitis as well as the identify-specific microorganisms involved; and (4) evaluate and determine the cell type of suspected neoplastic effusions. Pleural effusion samples may be collected when an effusion is suspected, e.g., when the patient has difficulty breathing because of a large volume of fluid or when a significant volume of effusion has been detected during diagnostic imaging. Pleuropneumonia is the most common pathologic process associated with pleural effusions in horses. Analyzing the pleural fluid is important for assessing the severity and pattern of inflammatory response as well as for detecting the presence and type of microorganisms. Cytologic evaluations are also important for detecting the presence and type of neoplastic cells in patients in which neoplasia is the underlying mechanism for the pleural effusion. Evaluating body cavity fluids consists of an initial visual assessment, with more specific information obtained by a cytologic evaluation. The intent of this article is to provide the practitioner with information on how to perform a cytologic evaluation of a body fluid sample, specifically peritoneal or pleural fluid samples.

The Cytological Evaluation of Effusions: What’s the confusion?
Normally, only a small amount of fluid is present in the body cavities of dogs and cats. This fluid provides lubrication that allows the frictionless movement of adjacent organ surfaces and the body cavity walls. Effusions are the abnormal or increased accumulation of this fluid in any of the body cavities that are lined by mesothelial cells. These include the thoracic, pericardial, and abdomin...
متن کاملDIFFERENTIATION BETWEEN BENIGN, REACTIVE AND MALIGNANT CELLS IN SEROSAL BODY FLUIDS BY AgNOR STAINING
Argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) were determined in 94 pleural, pericardial and peritoneal effusions. The results were correlated with cytologic diagnosis to determine the diagnostic potential of this technique. Cytologically the number of normal, reactive and malignant effusions were 32, 28 and 34 respectively. The mean AgNOR counts for normal, reactive and malignant spec...
متن کاملبررسی مقایسهای نتایج تشخیصی سیتولوژی و بیوپسی افیوژن بدخیم پلور در بیماران مراجعهکننده به بیمارستان شهید صدوقی یزد بین سالهای 1383 تا 1393
Introduction: Malignant pleural effusion is recognized as the second most common cause of exudative pleural effusion. Thoracentesis and cytological examinations are regarded as simple procedures that can be performed easier than biopsy presenting less pain and danger. Hence, this study aimed to compare the results of malignant pleural fluidcytology and pathology of effusions in order to determi...
متن کاملCytological evaluation and significance of cell cannibalism in effusions and urine cytology.
Cell cannibalism is believed to be an indicator of high-grade aggressive cancers with increased metastatic potential. It denotes both anaplastic grade and invasiveness and is valuable in assessing tumor behavior. The present study was a 2-year retrospective and 1-year prospective study conducted in the Department of Pathology, Government Medical College, Jammu. PAP and MGG stained smears of eff...

Introduction: Detection of malignant cells in the peritoneal cavity indicates the extension of cancer cells. The aim of this study is to evaluate the incidence rate of positive cytology in colorectal cancer and its relationship with the local progress of the tumor. Methods: In a 2-year prospective study in Mashhad and Iran Universities of Medical Sciences, peritoneal lavage was performed on...
